A recent report by the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) examines the use of analytics in higher education. The report is based on a survey of 334 NACUBO member institutions in which business officers were asked how the use of analytics informed their decision-making and the barriers that postsecondary institutions experience in integrating analytics.

The survey results suggest that enrollment and admissions are two areas that rely on analytics the most to support decision-making. These areas are followed by student progress, financial performance, and student success/outcomes. On the other hand, research costs, use of space, faculty workload planning, and human resources largely do not currently rely on analytics.

Despite consensus among business officers on the importance of increasing the use of analytics in most functional areas, the survey results indicate that there are cultural and capacity barriers to doing so. Examples concerns about mismanaging and misusing data on students, faculty, and staff, and lack of collaboration on campus on analytics.

The report concludes with comments related to a recent statement written by NACUBO, the Association for Institutional Research, and EDUCAUSE on the use of analytics.
